To understand Maki Squarepatch, you have to first know Maki, the cat: found abandoned on a highway in a terrible state, she was nursed back to health and today is as happy and adventurous as ever. Maki Squarepatch (the store) is therefore about taking discarded items and giving them a second lease on life; and what a life it is: owners Enqi and Xin infuse their bags, pouches and other accessories with a fresh and optimistic appeal that is simply contagious.

Most cuteable are their totes, which often feature adorable kittens and bears and a patchwork background. I like designer Xin’s choice of colors, which tend to make use of bright primaries; overlaid with plaid, striped and other types of eclectic fabrics, the overall effect is unedniably cute yet sassy.
