shellie mitchell’s fabric on wood art

The first time I saw Shellie Mitchell’s artwork, I sensed there was something special about it! Her collage-style art applies fabric to recycled wood with a rice-based starch, all of which is then coated with several times with polyurethane. The result is a hangable piece of art which can be left framed or unframed; the former option is fairly cheap as it does not require a glass front for protection.

Shellie’s scenes are definitely eclectic, ranging from pampered kitties and burbling brooks to vivid night scenes, replete with stars and crescent moons. Her use of fabrics is simply inspired, and goes beyond simply using them as backgrounds; I particularly love Green Tea for One, where she uses a leafy contrasting fabric to simulate the natural multicolored swirls of piping hot tea. If you’d like to see more of Shellie’s handmade goodness, stop by her shop here!
